Santiago Gaitan is a 24-year-old elite distance runner from Welland, Ontario, Canada, whose career spans high-level collegiate, national, and international competition. A former standout at Southern Utah University, Gaitan has competed across the 800m through the half marathon, establishing himself as one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian distance runners in the country.
During his time at SUU, Gaitan left a lasting mark on the program. He set multiple all-time marks across track events including the 1500m, mile, 3000m, and 5000m, while also becoming a conference champion in the mile and earning numerous podium finishes at the conference level. He qualified for the NCAA Track & Field Regional Championships twice during his collegiate career and was named All-Region in cross country in 2024. Gaitan also played a key role in Southern Utah’s historic 9th-place team finish at the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships, the strongest national performance in program history.
At the national level, Gaitan has continued to excel in recent seasons. In 2025, he finished 3rd at the Canadian Cross Country Championships, earning selection to Team Canada and qualifying to represent his country at the World Championships. That same year on the track, he placed 6th in the 5000m at the Canadian Track & Field Championships, running 13:51.56 after racing a 1500m preliminary earlier the same day, highlighting both his range and resilience under championship conditions.
Gaitan’s success has extended beyond the track. In October of 2025, he made his half marathon debut with a time of 1:00:53, the third-fastest performance in Canadian history under all conditions. His personal bests also include 1:50.57 for 800m, 3:41.88 in the 1500m, and a 3:58.33 mile converted from altitude, reflecting elite performance across a wide range of distances.
